Quick answer

Treat every Corrupted encounter as a route problem first. Current official material confirms that enemies react to sound, movement, and each other, so keep a retreat line, create noise only after preparing it, and fight when the objective or the path home actually requires it.

What is actually confirmed about the Corrupted

The official Steam description gives the most reliable general rule: Corrupted vessels react to sound, movement, and each other. It also presents three valid responses—fight, build, or run. That is more useful than pretending every contact has one universal counter.

GRAIN ROT’s version 1.0 added new enemies, a boss encounter, and Elite encounters. A complete roster copied from Demo footage would therefore be incomplete on arrival. This page covers the survival rules that current official material and post-launch observations support. It does not assign fixed health, damage, spawn rates, or weaknesses where the live game does not expose a stable value.

Make the return route before contact

Start each branch by knowing where you will go if something reacts. The elevator, a cleared junction, or a room with more than one usable exit is a plan. “Back the way I came” is not a plan if you cannot identify the turns under pressure.

Use short branch-and-return movements:

  1. Leave the elevator or last safe junction.
  2. Read the next room before committing to its far side.
  3. Keep the doorway and the previous turn in memory.
  4. Move required items back toward the known route.
  5. Open another branch only while the retreat remains simple.

This is the same anchor discipline used in the beginner route and solo guide, but enemies make the reason immediate. A short route lets you disengage without discovering another room at full speed.

Treat sound as a deliberate action

Official material confirms that the Corrupted react to sound. It does not publish a permanent hearing radius or a guaranteed stealth state. Do not turn “sound matters” into an invented number.

Before making noise, decide what happens next. If you are about to operate the Grinder, break furniture, or start another loud interaction, move important objects toward the exit, identify a fallback room, and preserve enough stamina to leave the area. Noise is safer when it completes the run’s objective; it is poor value when it only opens another optional risk.

A current Steam guide reports using the Grinder’s noise to pull enemies toward it while crossing another part of the route. Treat that as a situational community tactic, not mind control. The official description says enemies can react to each other as well as to players, so a noisy room can become less predictable rather than perfectly controlled.

Use furniture to buy space, not certainty

Tactical carpentry and interactive furniture are official features. A current post-launch Steam guide also reports that pressure plates or jump pads can obstruct an entrance for enemies.

That observation supports a useful principle: place furniture to slow access, separate a room, or create time for an interaction. It does not prove that every doorway, enemy shape, or generated room can be sealed permanently. Test the placement before trusting it with a task item.

Avoid building yourself into a single-exit room. A barrier that delays the Corrupted but also blocks your retreat has exchanged one problem for another. In co-op, tell the team which opening you changed so the route stays synchronized.

Decide whether the fight is mandatory

Fight when the contact blocks something that matters:

  • the only known path back to the elevator;
  • a required objective or progression item;
  • a teammate or replacement Vessel needed to keep the run alive;
  • a controlled area where the group has agreed to make a stand.

Leave when the enemy only guards optional value and the extraction condition is already ready. The deeper room may contain useful loot, but the completed objective and everything already staged for extraction are real value now.

Do not use an old video’s damage breakpoint to decide that a weapon is “enough.” Weapon condition, current upgrades, the encounter type, and post-launch balance can all change the result. If a useful weapon is deteriorating, use the current repair path instead of planning around one more unverified fight.

Preserve stamina for the break in contact

The most important sprint is usually not the first one toward an empty hallway. It is the sprint that clears a dangerous doorway after noise or contact.

Walk while the route is controlled. Spend stamina when it creates separation, reaches a prepared barrier, or returns you to a known junction. If you arrive at every new room with no reserve, movement has already stopped being a defensive option.

Solo players should be especially strict because nobody else can pull attention, carry the objective, or prepare the elevator at the same time. In co-op, avoid letting one player’s retreat cross through a teammate who is carrying a task item or using machinery.

If the Vessel breaks

A broken Vessel is not automatically the end of the run. The Living Spark can remain in the expedition and search for another host, but that recovery has its own urgency. Switch immediately from optional looting to recovery.

The dedicated Living Spark and revive guide explains what official sources confirm, what the squad should protect, and when unextracted loot is lost. The short version during an enemy encounter is simple: keep the Spark with the viable route, help it reach another host, and do not turn one broken Vessel into a full-team collapse.

Use this encounter checklist

Before committing to a room with a Corrupted presence, ask:

  • Do I know the route back to the elevator or last safe junction?
  • Am I about to create sound, and what will I do immediately after it?
  • Is the room required for the run’s objective?
  • Do I have stamina and weapon condition for one interruption?
  • Can furniture create time without removing my own exit?
  • If the Vessel breaks, is there still a recovery plan?

If the objective is already complete and several answers are no, the correct enemy strategy is often extraction. Surviving the Corrupted is not the same as defeating every Corrupted you can see.
