How Revives, Living Sparks & Vessels Work in GRAIN ROT
When a Vessel breaks, the player remains in the run as a Living Spark and must find another host before fading out. This is a host-replacement recovery, not a guaranteed return to the same body; if the entire crew is lost before extraction, the run’s unsecured loot is lost.

Quick answer
When a Vessel breaks, the player remains in the run as a Living Spark and must find another host before fading out. This is a host-replacement recovery, not a guaranteed return to the same body; if the entire crew is lost before extraction, the run’s unsecured loot is lost.
Is there a normal revive button?
Official descriptions frame recovery around the Living Spark and a replacement host, not an automatic return to the same wooden body. When a Vessel breaks, its Spark escapes and stays in the run. The player then searches for another host and returns with that host’s abilities.
That distinction matters. A broken Vessel is a new objective, not a free extra life. The official Steam page says the Spark must force its way back into a host before it fades out completely. No permanent recovery timer is published on the store page or official FAQ, so this guide does not invent one.
What the Living Spark can still do
The official Steam description says a Spark can stay in the expedition, guide the team through the dark, and search for another host. The official FAQ likewise says the Spark remains with the crew while looking for a Vessel to possess.
Use that state to support recovery:
- stay with teammates or the clearest known route rather than drifting into another branch;
- communicate the route, hazards, and any host opportunity you can identify;
- keep the group focused on recovery instead of extending the loot path;
- avoid turning the Spark’s limited recovery window into a sightseeing phase.
The official sources do not document a fixed host room or guaranteed distance. The Deep Layers shift, so another player’s recorded recovery route is a visual example rather than a map for every seed.
How to return through another Vessel
Search the current route for a valid host and use the possession interaction the live game presents. Official material confirms that different Vessels can provide different ways to return to the action. That means the replacement is not necessarily an identical copy of the body that broke.
Do not delay recovery while waiting for a theoretical “best” host. A usable Vessel that restores participation and protects the run is more valuable than an ideal body in an unexplored branch.
After possession, re-read the situation:
- Confirm the player is active in the new Vessel.
- Check the route back toward the elevator.
- Reassess health, equipment, and the original objective.
- Decide whether the recovered group still has enough margin to continue.
Recovery does not reset the danger that caused the break. If a Corrupted encounter still controls the room, use the current enemy survival guide before moving the same route again.
What teammates should prioritize
In co-op, the surviving crew should make the host search safer rather than treating the broken player as permanently out of the run. Keep the Spark included in route calls, reduce unnecessary noise, and clear only the space required for recovery.
Avoid splitting farther apart. The official FAQ describes the Spark as remaining with the crew; a group that opens multiple new branches makes both communication and recovery harder. If somebody is already carrying a task item, decide who protects that progression and who helps find the host instead of moving every valuable object into the same danger.
This is one of the clearest reasons to agree on jobs before descent. The multiplayer guide covers lobby setup and route roles; Spark recovery should become the squad’s temporary shared objective when a Vessel breaks.
What changes in solo play
GRAIN ROT officially supports single-player, and the same Steam description says the player can remain as a Spark and search for another host. Solo recovery is less forgiving because no teammate can hold a route or deal with another task while the Spark searches.
Keep solo routes compact before the break happens. A known elevator anchor, short branches, and remembered host opportunities give the Spark a practical search area. If the run has already become geographically confusing, the recovery problem is larger than the broken Vessel.
Do not assume a solo break means an instant wipe, but do not assume another host is guaranteed in the next room either. The solo strategy guide focuses on keeping only one urgent job active at a time; after a break, that job is finding a Vessel.
When is the loot actually lost?
The official FAQ separates a personal Vessel break from a complete crew loss. One broken Vessel does not necessarily end the run. If the entire crew is lost before extracting, however, anything not yet brought back to the Outpost is lost.
Progress and resources secured in earlier successful runs remain safe. This means there are three distinct states:
- Vessel broken: the Spark may still recover through another host.
- Run still active: surviving Vessels can continue or extract while recoverable Sparks still seek a host.
- Entire crew lost: unsecured loot from that expedition is lost.
Do not tell a player that “death loses everything” when only one Vessel broke. Do not tell the squad that recovery is consequence-free when a full loss still threatens the haul.
Patch 1.04 and blocked respawns
Official Patch 1.04 fixed a bug where a player could not respawn because the area was blocked. If a current recovery behaves like that old issue, first verify the game is updated to Patch 1.04 or later. At this page’s August 12 check, Patch 1.06 is current.
If the problem continues on the current version, record the host, room state, whether you were hosting or joining, and what the interaction showed. The official FAQ asks players to report reproducible steps, session type, screenshots or video, and approximate time through the official support channels.
Recovery checklist
When a Vessel breaks:
- Call out the break and stop optional looting.
- Keep the Spark with the known route or surviving crew.
- Search for a usable host instead of an ideal one.
- Reduce noise and avoid opening unrelated branches.
- Confirm possession before resuming the objective.
- Extract if the recovery removed the group’s remaining margin.
The Living Spark system keeps a broken Vessel from being an automatic spectator screen. It does not remove the need to protect the run.
