How to Get and Use the Umbrella in GRAIN ROT

Where is the first umbrella?

Two independent post-launch sources point to the same starting route: unlock the Outpost second floor and check its balcony. A Steam guide updated August 10 calls it a free umbrella; an August 9–10 player discussion likewise describes finding the umbrella on that balcony before using it for Scorch travel.

This is an Outpost progression reward, not a fixed spawn inside a procedural Deep Layers room. If the second floor is still blocked, complete the second-floor unlock route before repeatedly searching generated floors for an umbrella.

Official Patch 1.04 also fixed unintended fire damage for Vessels on balconies. That patch note does not document the umbrella location, but it matters when comparing current balcony access with launch footage. Update the game before treating balcony damage in an older clip as intended behavior.

What the umbrella is for

Current players use the umbrella to cross the exposed Scorch outside the Outpost without taking the same direct sun damage as an uncovered Vessel. Treat it as surface protection, not a universal answer to every source of fire.

The umbrella does not replace the separate interaction used to burn Grain Rot away from the second floor. One protects a Vessel during exposed travel; the other clears a progression obstruction. If the upstairs route is still contaminated, follow the burn step in the second-floor guide instead of holding the umbrella at the Rot and waiting for it to disappear.

Because no official range or protection value is published, verify the shade in the live game before committing to a long route. Move in short stages, watch the Vessel’s current condition, and keep a safe return path. A community observation that works near one route is not proof of unlimited protection at every distance.

An August 10 Steam report says the umbrella stopped preventing sun damage after the player travelled away from the Outpost. The report does not prove that every save or route fails, and official notes through Patch 1.06 do not list an umbrella fix. It does mean this page cannot promise uninterrupted protection across the whole Scorch.

Can one umbrella protect multiple players?

The current Scorch discussion includes a two-player report where one player carried the umbrella and the other stayed close enough to travel with the protection. That makes sharing a practical option when the group owns only the balcony umbrella.

Do not convert that report into an exact radius. Keep the group tight, let the holder control the pace, and stop if the uncovered player begins taking damage. Wide formations and split objectives defeat the point of sharing one shade source.

Use a simple co-op rhythm:

1. Agree on the destination before leaving cover.
2. Put the umbrella holder in the stable center of the group.
3. Move one short segment at a time.
4. Check Vessel condition before extending the route.
5. Return together rather than leaving the holder behind.

The multiplayer route advice still applies: communicate the stop condition and keep everyone’s map synchronized.

Does the umbrella have durability?

Current players describe the umbrella as an item that can be used up or broken. The same Scorch discussion reports that a damaged umbrella may be repairable at the upstairs upgrade machine while a completely destroyed one is no longer available to repair.

That repair behavior is a community observation, not an official published recipe. Check the live machine interaction while the umbrella still exists and read the displayed requirement before spending anything. Preserve the first umbrella as progression equipment:

• carry it for a defined surface objective, not general decoration;
• stop when its condition is no longer comfortable for the return trip;
• try the current repair interface before total failure;
• avoid lending it to an optional route while the main Scorch objective is unfinished.

Does Murch sell replacement umbrellas?

Current community reports agree that Murch can eventually offer another umbrella or parasol-type item. They do not agree on the earliest shop level, exact price, or whether a particular shop state is guaranteed to show it.

The Steam guide author reported seeing one at a later shop level but explicitly did not know the first possible level. Players in the Scorch discussion supplied different thresholds and prices. Those conflicts are why this page does not publish “upgrade Murch to level X” or a fixed Gold amount.

Use the reliable part of the evidence:

• unlock and preserve the balcony umbrella first;
• continue normal Murch and Outpost progression;
• check the live shop inventory after upgrades or refreshes;
• read the current price rather than budgeting around a launch-week comment.

If a future official patch note gives a guaranteed unlock level or changes availability, that note should replace these observations.

What to do if the balcony umbrella is missing

Check the progression state in order:

1. Confirm the second floor is actually unlocked and accessible.
2. Update to the current patch; Patch 1.04 specifically changed balcony damage behavior.
3. Search the second-floor balcony carefully rather than a random Deep Layers room.
4. Confirm another player did not move, store, or already break the item in the shared Outpost.
5. Check Murch’s current inventory without assuming one fixed level.

If the item is absent on a fresh current-version save with the correct progression, record the patch, objective state, balcony area, and shared-session context before reporting it. A screenshot of an empty expected location is more useful than an unsupported claim that every save has the same bug.

Current umbrella route in one pass

Unlock the second floor, collect the balcony umbrella, use it for a short verified Scorch route, and keep the group close when sharing. Protect its remaining condition and check the live upstairs machine before it breaks completely. Treat Murch as a later replacement path with version-sensitive inventory—not as a guaranteed shop level or fixed price.
